PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical multiplexing/demultiplexing element in which a radiation loss generated in a connection part between a slab waveguide and a waveguide structure is reduced.;SOLUTION: An optical multiplexing/demultiplexing element comprises a slab waveguide 11 and a waveguide structure 4. The waveguide structure 4 is connected to an MMI waveguide coupler 14, a first tapered waveguide 15, a wide waveguide 16, and a second tapered waveguide 17 along a waveguide direction in this order from a connection position with the slab waveguide 11. A waveguide core composing the MMI waveguide coupler 14, the first tapered waveguide 15, a connection part with the first tapered waveguide 15, and the middle of the wide waveguide 16 is set to have a left-side waveguide region L, a central waveguide region C, and a right-side waveguide region R along the waveguide direction. Thicknesses of the left-side waveguide region L and the right-side waveguide region R are less than a thickness of the central waveguide region C, and the left-side waveguide region L and the right-side waveguide region R are formed in a symmetric shape to the central waveguide region C.;SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1;COPYRIGHT: (C)2017,JPO&INPIT
