PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat treatment method that can provide a heat-treated workpiece having a high hardness in the surface layer portion and a low hardness in the inside layer portion compared to the surface layer portion in a short period of time without carrying out carburization.;SOLUTION: The heat treatment method applied to a workpiece made of carbon steel or alloy steel is provided that comprises a heating step (A) of heating the workpiece to a temperature of austenitizing temperature or higher and a cooling step (B) of cooling the workpiece by ejecting a cooling medium to the heated workpiece.
