The method of the present invention eliminates the manual calibration phase by performing the calibration automatically in the background in a manner transparent to the user. The calibration is carried out permanently as the software is used, thus enabling continuous improvement and constant adaptation to any physiological or user positioning changes. The method comprises the following steps: 1) During the first use, the system uses a standard average calibration that is unique to all users. 2) As soon as the user's gaze is within an object that can be selected, the system automatically moves the cursor to the center of the object. 3) When the user triggers the activation of the selected object, the coordinates of the center of the selected object and the coordinates of the gaze provided by the "eye tracking" system with the standard calibration are recorded. 4) Calculation of the calibration for a given user is then carried out continuously in batches of n measurements according to the stochastic gradient method, in order to determine the function f which makes it possible to approximate the point of gaze. The method according to the invention is particularly intended for computer applications using "eye tracking" devices as an input device.
