The present invention relates to a method for switching a plurality of battery cells (21) of a battery (11), wherein the plurality of battery cells (21) are connected in series with one another and for all battery cells (21) a single first control variable P1 and a single second control variable P2 become. In this case, to generate a desired output voltage of the battery (11), each battery cell (21) with a corresponding, defined in dependence on the first control variable P1, first probability to the battery (11) electrically coupled and each with a corresponding, depending on the second control variable P2 defined, second probability of the battery (11) electrically decoupled. Further, a value of the first control quantity P1 and a value of the second control quantity P2 are respectively preset repeatedly with an update frequency depending on the desired output voltage of the battery (11) to be generated.
