A method is provided for setting a parameter value for at least one adjustable device parameter of an optical observation device which comprises at least one means for setting parameter values for the at least one device parameter and is equipped with at least one electronic image sensor. The method comprises the steps of: a) providing (S3) at least one image quality criterion and an acceptable value range or value for an image quality value to be determined on the basis of the image quality criterion; b) setting (S4) a parameter value for the at least one device parameter; c) taking (S5) an image by means of the at least one image sensor; d) determining (S6) an image quality value for the captured image based on the image quality criterion; e) determining (S7) whether the determined image quality value is in the acceptable value range of the image quality criterion or the acceptable value of the image quality criterion, f) repeating steps b) to e) with a different parameter value for the at least one device parameter if in step e ) is determined that the determined image quality value is not within the acceptable value range or does not correspond to the acceptable value, and accepting (S8) the parameter value for the at least one device parameter if the determined image quality value is within the acceptable value range or the acceptable value.
