The present application deals with glass forming iron based alloys which are produced as a mixed structure comprising metallic glass or metallic glass and a nanocrystalline phase, resulting in an extraordinary combination of strength and ductility. In particular, high strain rates up to 97% and high strengths up to 5.9 GPa were measured. In addition, high elasticity up to 2.6%, consistent with the amorphous structure, was observed. Thus, the new alloys developed have a structure and properties that yields high strength, as can be observed in nanoscale materials, as well as high resilient, soft crystalline metal similar to metallic glass.
