In order to make available a substance mixture for finishing dental restorations of zirconium dioxide, comprising an overburnable lithium silicate system and/or feldspar system, and a method for producing a dental restoration, which system and method allow dental reconstructions with improved optical and mechanical properties to be produced and fitted quickly and inexpensively and without the disadvantages of the prior art, it is proposed that the lithium silicate system and/or feldspar system is present in a dispersion with a preferably organic liquid, volatile at least under normal conditions, or that a raw veneering layer composed of a substance mixture of said type is sprayed onto a dental restoration of zirconium dioxide, wherein the restoration has substantially the outer dimensions of the tooth that is to be restored, the restoration is left to dry, and the restoration is subjected to a temperature treatment in order to produce an alternately diffused composite layer between the dental restoration and the raw veneering layer, with the raw veneering layer crystallizing out to form a veneering layer.
