Disclosed is an article sorting system, comprising a frame (1), a sorting car (2), a detection device (3) and a control device. The sorting car (2) has a sorting mechanism (21) for conveying sorted articles to be output in a Y-axis direction. The detection device (3) is mounted on one side of the frame (1) and is used for detecting the sorted articles and conveying same to the sorting car (2). The control device is connected to the sorting car (2) and the detection device (3) respectively via electrical signals and controls the detection device (3) to detect and convey the sorted articles, the motion of the sorting car (2) in an X-axis direction and the motion of the sorting mechanism (21) in the Y-axis direction. A library self-help book returning machine comprising the article sorting system is further disclosed. The sorting system has a compact structure, the space occupied thereby is largely reduced, and the sorting categories are significantly improved. When the sorting car (2) outputs the sorted articles in the Y-axis direction and moves in the X-axis direction, the sorted articles stay still on the sorting car (2), and the existing problem in the art that the sorted articles are always in a moving state in the sorting process will not appear, and the possibility of damaging the sorted articles is reduced.
