Provided is a lithium sodium complex oxide that has a high energy density (high capacity and high voltage), and that is an important cathode active material for secondary batteries in which sudden voltage drops when discharging are suppressed. Also provided are: a method for manufacturing the lithium sodium complex oxide; a cathode active material for secondary batteries having the lithium sodium complex oxide as a main component; and a secondary battery using the lithium sodium complex oxide as a cathode active material. The lithium sodium complex oxide of the present invention is represented by the formula (LixNawHv)NiyMn1-yO2-z (wherein 0 ≤ v 0.5; 0 w 1.0; 0 x 1.0; 0 x + v + w 1.0; 0.2 ≤ y ≤ 0.5; 0 ≤ z 0.13). The crystal structure comprises a lamellar structure of a coordination polyhedron wherein six oxygens are coordinated with sodium, a lamellar structure of a coordination polyhedron wherein six oxygens are coordinated with lithium, a spinel structure wherein four oxygens are coordinated with lithium, and at least one structure selected from the group comprising spinel structures wherein four oxygens are coordinated with lithium.
