The purpose of the present invention is to provide a method for evaluating the water vapor transmission rate, whereby the water vapor transmission rate and the in-plane variability thereof in a gas barrier film or the like can be measured simultaneously. This method for evaluating the water vapor transmission rate is characterized by using a corrodible metal that is corroded by a reaction with moisture, and by including at least the following steps (1) to (5). (1) An evaluation cell equipped with a water impermeable substrate, a corrodible metal layer, and an evaluation sample, in that order, is prepared. (2) Before and after exposure to water vapor, light is caused to impinge on the evaluation cell, and the change in an optical characteristic of the corrodible metal layer is measured. (3) A specified area of the corrodible metal layer is divided into a given number of equal divisions numbering 10 or more and respectively having a given unit planar area, and the amount of change of the optical characteristic of each mutually corresponding section is measured. (4) The volume of corroded sections is calculated from the measured amount of change of optical characteristic, and the water vapor transmission rate is calculated. (5) On the basis of the water vapor transmission rate obtained in (4), the average and standard deviation are calculated.
