Conveying apparatus adapted to convey a particulate material from a source to a burner provided at a flash furnace, the apparatus comprising: pneumatic conveying means adapted to convey the particulate material at a relatively high velocity; a flow modifying device provided at or near the burner inlet, wherein the flow modifying device is adapted to receive and arrest the flow of the conveyed particulate material such that the particulate material flows to the burner inlet at a reduced velocity.
