An educational, three dimensional astronomical apparatus was created forinstructing students on howthe phases of the moon, the lunar eclipses, the solar eclipses and the seasonsare produced by theinteraction among the sun, the earth and the moon. The system is enclosed in adark box that containsmodels of the sun, the earth and the moon. A mechanism simulates the moon'srotation around theearth with its tilted orbit with respect to the ecliptic. Several lightingoptions and observation windowsare provided; this way, depending on the classroom illumination and number ofattending students, thedemonstrator can easily make adjustments to achieve best results. Theapparatus was designed in suchinnovative way that the inherent human learning processes, based on perceptionof depth and eye-handcoordination, were best stimulated.
