The present invention determines the shear characteristics of the granular soil at low normal stresses. There are some differences in shear characteristics of soil of plateau and of slope because of low normal stresses. The shear box assembly with two halves is placed over a steel stand and the shear box is lifted using a hydraulic jack from one end making it to rotate. This decreases normal stress and increases shear stress on the shear box causing the top half of the shear box to slide over the bottom half as the angle of rotation increases gradually and at certain point the top half slides. Dial gauges mounted over the apparatus provides the shear displacement and normal displacement which helps in determining shear strength of the soils under gravity or slope conditions. Thus shear characteristics are determined using the present invention.
