Abstract In an aspect of the present invention, an axial flow compressor comprises a rotor having plurality of rotating blades and stator having plurality of stationary blades. Each of the rotating blades comprises at least an aspiration slot to allow a fraction of the working fluid to flow through the slot from pressure surface to suction surface of the rotating blade. In one embodiment, the flow of working fluid through the slot reduces the boundary layer thickness on the suction surface of the rotating blade. In another embodiment, the slot is arranged at spanwise and chordwise locations and connects pressure surface to the suction surface of the rotor blade. Also, the slot is located at a distance closer to the leading edge than to the trailing edge of the rotor blade. In another aspect of the present invention, a method of increasing the stall margin in axial flow compressors involving the procedure of making a slot on the compressor rotor blades, connecting pressure and suction surfaces at appropriate chordwise and spanwise locations from the blade leading edge and blade tip, determining appropriate chordwise widths at pressure and suction surfaces of the rotor blade, determining appropriate spanwise length, and at appropriate angle with respect to the rotor blade chord line, thereby allowing a small fraction of working fluid to pass through the slot, energizing the low momentum suction surface boundary layer and enhancing the stall margin by allowing suction surface boundary layer to become thinner.
