Embodiments of the present disclosure pertain to a method for preparing in-situ polymer derived nano size ceramic reinforced metal matrix composites of copper and copper alloys that uses friction stir processing. The nano size ceramic reinforcement is derived from a polymer that disintegrates to nano fragments and thereafter decomposes to ceramic phase by pyrolysis within the metal matrix at temperature attained during friction stir processing. The composites exhibit markedly improved mechanical properties and retain it even at elevated temperatures close to melting point.
