A system and method for creating an index of medical records in a medical database is described. Medical elements from the medical records of a patient are identified. The medical elements are split into medical sub-elements. The medical sub elements relates to a medical data corresponding to the medical element. The index is created based on said split of medical elements into the medical sub elements. The medical elements and medical sub elements in the index are represented in a hierarchical relationship.
