"Method for improving voice call routing efficiency in a wireless communication network, mobile switching center for use in a wireless communication network, and communication network providing both packet and voice data services" . A service MSC in a wireless communication network, such as an IS-2000 network, uses standard signaling messages in an unconventional manner to enable it to play the role of an MSC anchor under certain inter-MSC control transfer conditions. . When a mobile station busy on an active packet data call is transferred from control of an anchor msc to the service msc, the service msc sends an indication to the anchor msc that the data call has been released although the call is still active. . The service msc then causes the mobile station hlr location information to be updated to identify the service msc as the new anchor msc. thus, the service msc becomes the msc anchor under conditions where it would not otherwise avoid avoiding routing subsequent voice calls by the previous msc anchor. The above approach also includes variations that accommodate simultaneous voice and data control transfer scenarios.
