PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device capable of simply and accurately estimating a destruction cause of a metallic material.SOLUTION: A destruction cause of a broken metallic material is estimated by an electron back scattering diffraction image method. A plane perpendicular to a fracture surface in the broken metallic material is used as a measuring plane, the measuring plane is irradiated with an electron beam to obtain an electron back scattering diffraction image. A crystal orientation at each irradiation point is determined on the basis of the electron back scattering diffraction image, and an azimuth difference at each irradiation point is determined. Then, the measuring plane is divided into a plurality of sections at predetermined intervals in the depth direction from the fracture surface, a mean value of the azimuth differences of the plurality of irradiation points each belonging to each of the sections is obtained, the mean values are plotted on a coordinate with the depth from the fracture surface as an abscissa and the azimuth difference as an ordinate, and an azimuth difference curve is obtained on the basis of this plot. The pattern of the obtained azimuth difference curve is compared with a standard azimuth difference curve obtained by using a standard sample having a destruction cause known in advance, thereby determining the destruction cause of a broken metallic material.
