The present disclosure provides semiconductor-metal composite nanoparticles having optical properties superior to those of pure materials for use as contrast agents. The composite includes noble metal nanoparticles having a layer of linker molecules bound to the surface of the noble metal nanoparticles and a layer of dye molecules bound to the layer of linker molecules. When dye molecules are bound to noble metal nanoparticles, they are selected to form an ordered structure that exhibits a collective absorption band shift compared to individual dye molecules. This structure is a multi-shell structure with properties suitable for biosensing and other detection applications, showing enhanced Raman scattering compared to nanoparticles with dye molecules attached in a non-regular form Is encapsulated in a stabilizing coating layer that forms [Selection] Figure 1C
