PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To conduct a test of a hydrogen embrittlement characteristic of a steel material with a constant load and a constant hydrogen amount to improve accuracy of measured data and evaluate the hydrogen embrittlement characteristic in a fewer number of times of testing.SOLUTION: An evaluation method is to measure breakage stress by sequentially conducting a process of, without applying flow stress on a steel material, electrochemically charging the steel material with hydrogen at least until the hydrogen amount becomes constant in the steel material by current generation means, then applying flow stress of less than a tensile strength on the test material by constant-load generation means while continuing the hydrogen charge to hold the steel material for a certain period of time, and, when breakage does not occur, afterwards increasing the tensile strength or the hydrogen amount in the steel material to hold the steel material for a certain period of time, until the breakage occurs.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
