A method for operating a building installation with a situation monitor 3 comprises a monitoring area 6 multi-dimensional detecting sensor 4 and a sensor data for serving the control unit 5. By the control unit 5, at least one actuator L 1 to L 4 of a building technical installation can be controlled. The user-side control of the at least one actuator L 1 to L 4 is carried out by gesture control, wherein for controlling an actuator L 1 to L 4, the data detected by the situation monitor 3 data are evaluated in terms of the presence of a pointing gesture. In the system configuration, at least one actuator L 1 to L 4 that can be controlled by a pointing gesture is defined in the coordinate system of the data detected by the sensor 4 by an enveloping body 13, 13.1 enclosing or representing such an actor L 1 to L 4 . A system-side activation of this actuator L 1 to L 4 takes place when the user is shown with a predefined pointing gesture on the enveloping body 13, 13.1.;Furthermore, a building installation with a situation monitor 3 is described, comprising a sensor 4 which detects its multi-dimensional monitoring area 6 and a control unit 5 serving to evaluate the sensor data and with at least one actuator which can be controlled by the control unit 5 of the situation monitor. The control unit 5 is associated with a memory unit or the control unit 5 comprises a memory unit in which a predefined pointer gesture as a pattern and the coordinates of each at least one actuator L 1 to L 4 enclosing or such a virtual performing enveloping body 13, 13.1 are stored.
