A wideband interference mitigation (IM) system divides an input signal 101 into a primary path 114 and an auxiliary path 124. The desired signal is removed from the signal passing through the auxiliary signal path, but interfering signals within a bandwidth of interest are retained. The auxiliary path includes interference cancellation circuitry 106 for generating a signal to combine 116 with the primary path in order to cancel interference from the primary path. The interference cancellation circuitry includes an element with negative group delay (NGD) 110. The negative group delay is to compensate for the group delay of other elements of the auxiliary signal path, to minimise group delay differences between the primary and auxiliary paths. The system may be applied in a receiver, between an antenna and a low noise amplifier (LNA). The cancellation circuitry preferably additionally includes a band-pass filter 108. The auxiliary path preferably includes first and second frequency selective circuits at either end of the path 104, 112, such as down-converters and up-converters respectively. The NGD element may be a band-stop (or notch) filter which not only performs the group delay compensation but also carries out the removal of the desired signal.
