An actuator device comprising a motor-driven cam element, an engagement element connected to an output element and moved by the cam element, and a control unit for controlling the engine operation. The cam member has a first cam surface, a second cam surface and a stroke range between the first and second cam surface. The control unit is configured to detect a predetermined point on the stroke area when the engagement member is moved relative to the cam member along the stroke area toward the second cam surface. The control unit detects the predetermined point based on a rate of change in the position of the output member along the output member axis as a function of the rotational position of the cam member about the cam member axis. The control unit controls the engine operation based on the predetermined point to position the engagement member on the second cam member surface.
