A method is provided for providing fuel efficient regeneration of an exhaust aftertreatment (AT) system including a lean nitrogen oxide (NOx) trap (LNT) and a selective catalytic reduction (SCRF) filter positioned downstream of the LNT is. The method includes regulating a selectable position valve. The valve permits passage of a first portion of gas flow through the LNT and redirects a remaining second portion of the gas flow from a first passage connecting an engine and the AT system to a second exhaust passage, thereby bypassing the LNT. The method also includes regulating a first device to inject fuel into the first portion of the exhaust gas flow. Injecting fuel into the first portion of the exhaust flow provides fuel efficient regeneration of the LNT and aids NOx conversion and ammonia (NH3) formation in the LNT. It is also a system that uses the method disclosed.
