The invention relates to a method for determining a NOx reduction performance (η) of a NOx reduction catalyst device (11) in an exhaust line (3) of an automotive internal combustion engine (1) upstream of a branch (15) of a low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation line (16) for the inlet side of the internal combustion engine (1) zurückzuführendem exhaust gas is arranged. In the method, a measured value for the upstream NOx content (NOxS1) of the exhaust gas is detected by means of an upstream exhaust gas sensor (17) arranged upstream of the NOx reduction catalytic converter (11) and a prescribable low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation rate (NDAGR ). A data processing unit (19) determines the NOx reduction performance (η) from at least one of the upstream NOx content (NOxS1) and the low pressure exhaust gas recirculation rate (NDAGR), but omitting a value of the downstream NOx content (NOxS2 ).
