The invention relates to a method for representation of a rare earth element by means of a redox reaction, wherein the educt side of the reaction comprises a rare earth compound, in which the rare earth element in a positive oxidation number is present and comprising hydrogen. The invention is characterised in that the redox reaction runs in two stages, whereby firstly a hydrogenation reaction between one elementary rare earth element and hydrogen to a rare earth hydride, and subsequently a reaction between the rare earth compound and the rare earth hydride, as a product of the reaction an elemental selenium earth element and at the same time a hydrogen-containing connection is produced.
