Provided are a wear resistant austenitic steel having superior machinability and toughness in welding heat affected portion thereof and a method for producing same. The austenitic steel comprises, in weight %, 15 to 25% of manganese (Mn), 0.8 to 1.8% of carbon (C), copper (Cu) that satisfies 0.7C-0.56 (%) = Cu = 5%, 0.03 to 0.1% of sulfur (S), 0.001 to 0.01% of calcium (Ca), and remaining amount of Fe and other inevitable impurities. The Charpy impact value of the welding heat affected portion of the austenitic steel at -40C is 100 J or higher. According to the present invention, provided is austenitic steel having superior machinability by suppressing carbide generation in the welding heat affected portion after welding, thus preventing the toughness of the welding heat affected portion from being degraded, and by improving corrosion resistance, thus enabling the steel to be used over a long period of time in a corrosive environment.
