The present invention provides a method for screening an agent as a drug candidate for suppressing proliferation and/or transformation of interstitial cells, comprising the steps of: (i) contacting an interstitial cell with the agent; and (ii) determining the ability of the agent to modulate the activity and/or expression of at least one potassium channel of interstitial cells, by comparing the interstitial cell that has been contacted with the agent, to a control interstitial cell that has not been contacted with the agent, thereby determining the suitability of the agent as a drug candidate for suppressing proliferation and/or transformation of interstitial cells. The invention also relates to a method for suppressing proliferation and/or transformation of interstitial cells. The invention also relates to a method of screening for an agent as a drug candidate for modulating endogenous H2S production in interstitial cells.
