The process includes cultivating isolated bacteria in a bioreactor for dark fermentation under specific nutritional conditions for producing hydrogen from an organic substrate, wherein nitrogen supply is optimized; and cultivating another isolated bacteria in the effluent of dark fermentation under specific conditions and nutritional supplementation in a photo bioreactor, thereby integrating dark and photo-fermentation for enhancing hydrogen production.
