PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow subpixel edge acquisition directly from a gray image without performing binarization processing to the gray image, and also to allow a robust edge extraction despite a brightness variation of an image caused by illumination fluctuation and the like as binarization is not performed on the gray image.SOLUTION: A maximum gradient direction of brightness with a target pixel in a gray image as a center is acquired, and an edge search reference value is acquired based on a pixel brightness on a mountain side and a pixel brightness on a valley side in the maximum gradient direction with the target pixel as a reference. Furthermore, among the pixels arranged in the maximum gradient direction with the target pixel as a reference, edge search is performed by subpixel processing based on the edge search reference value. After the completion of the edge search, processing of S10 to S60 is repeatedly carried out for the pixels adjacent in the direction orthogonal to the maximum gradient direction.
