PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for specifying an approximate elevation value of elevation data.;SOLUTION: The apparatus for specifying an approximate elevation value is configured to: select a road link for which an approximate elevation value is to be specified, from a map data storage part; form a 3D link of the link on the basis of mesh elevation data; form a reference line on the basis of start and end points of the 3D link; decide estimated polygonal point coordinates on the 3D link so that the relation between the reference line and points on the 3D link satisfies a first condition; form an approximate polygonal line approximate to the 3D link in consideration of an error width in the elevation value of the estimated polygonal point coordinates; and specify the elevation value of the polygonal point in the formed approximate polygonal line, as an approximate elevation value.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT
