A method for monitoring combustion characteristics within the furnace is described. The beam of light is projected through a projecting optics that includes a projecting collimator lens positioned outside the boiler interior. The light projecting collimator lens projects the beam into the boiler through the through hole. The light beam projected by the light projecting collimator lens is reflected by at least one in-furnace retroreflector and received by a light receiving optical device that is substantially identical to the light projecting optical device positioned outside the boiler. The The light projecting optical device and the light receiving optical device can be integrated into the same light projecting / receiving optical device. The projection collimator lens can also be redirected towards another retroreflector of the at least one in-furnace retroreflector. The combustion characteristics can be calculated for each retroreflector or based on the retroreflector zone in the furnace.
