A second wireless device (STA 11, figure 1) checks channel quality on a second data link (15B) between itself and a network access point, AP (20). If the device (11) receives a message from a first device (10) to the network AP (20) indicating that the first device is terminating (via a disassociation frame request) 202 a first data link 15A with the network AP (20), the second device (11) defers its disassociation 204 and conditions its own termination of the second data link on a re-assessment 208 of the channel quality (e.g. delay and throughput) after the first data link is terminated. When a device (10/11) decides to terminate a data link between the device and the AP (20), it sends a message to the AP to initiate the termination without regard to whether the device is depowering a network interface card. The network AP may be an AP of an IEEE 802-type wireless local area network, WLAN. The invention enables neighbour devices to know that channel conditions are likely to improve immediately following a pending disconnect or disassociation, and enables those neighbour devices to defer their own disconnect/disassociate action until they can test the channel again.
