A syringe using propellant that boils at a predetermined temperature, the syringe comprising a barrel 12 and a stopper 16 axially moveable in the barrel and defining a first forward chamber 18 for receiving a medicament and a second rear chamber 20, and a third chamber for containing propellant. When liquid propellant is released from the third chamber an increasing vapour pressure in the second chamber 20 causes the stopper 16 to move axially forwardly and begin to expel medicament. The syringe further comprises at least one trigger for triggering an action in response to the pressure in the second chamber satisfying a predetermined condition. For example the action may move the syringe 12 forwardly in a housing 600 using piston trigger 606, may move a needle shield, or may move a seal to open a vent when the pressure is above a threshold. The subsequent decrease in pressure from venting may allow a biasing member 632 to exert a force on the second chamber to retract the syringe and needle after use. The third chamber may be rupturable.
