The measurement of a soils negative pore water pressure or matric suction can be achieved by placing the soil in contact with a shrinkable micro-porous material that has been previously calibrated for its matric suction verses moisture content or volume relationship. The material may be a pure clay such as bentonite or smectite for which a water retention curve is known or can be determined. This technique is considered to achieve equilibrium faster and to provide greater reliability, accuracy and consistency compared to the present state of the art techniques, such as the use of filter paper.
