The method involves controlling a staged supercharging device according to a mode in which a low pressure turbocharger (4) is used for compressing air-fuel mixtures. The supercharging device is controlled according to another mode in which the low pressure turbocharger and a high pressure turbocharger (5) are simultaneously used to compress the air-fuel mixtures. Inlet gas flow occurring at an entrance of the supercharging device is checked when a trigger condition considers a physical parameter i.e. speed, during transmission of the former mode into the latter mode or vice versa. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an electronic control unit (2) a drive train (3) a car.
