The system has a high temperature mineral-insulated cable (102) having a blade connected to an ultrasonic transducer (101), where the cable includes a metal sleeve (112). An ultrasonic transmitter/receiver (117) causes the transducer to emit ultrasonic waves, and receive waves reflected by a pipe (106). A temperature measuring instrument (115) measures the temperature of the pipe. A signal recorder (104) compensates a change in speed of sound of an ultrasonic wave propagating through the pipe using information on the temperature of the pipe, and measures the thickness of the pipe.
