The method involves determining total mass of gas mixture contained in a combustion chamber (8) at an inlet end, and determining mass of gas flarings contained in the combustion chamber at the inlet end, where an inlet valve (10) allows admission of fresh air in the combustion chamber. The mass of fuel contained in the combustion chamber at the inlet end is determined, where the fuel contains the petrol and/or alcohol. The mass of air is determined by removing total mass of gas mixture from the mass of gas flarings and the mass of the fuel. An independent claim is also included for a controller for determining mass of fresh air allowed inside a combustion chamber of a cylinder of a thermal engine of a motor vehicle.
