The method involves placing a front edge layer of a sheet (1) on a desk (5) at a first measuring device (S1). A second measuring device (S2) is provided in an acquisition line (6). A layer of a sheet halt system (9) is aligned on a base by the first measuring device. The front edge layer of the sheet is engaged with the second measuring device. Position of the front edge layer is detected. The sheet is passed to a sheet conveyor system. Deviation of the front edge layer in the detection line is corrected based on sensing values of the second measuring device. An independent claim is also included for a device for aligning sheets.
