Preparing cellulose-tert-alkyl-azo-cyano-carboxylic acid ester having a backbone formed from cellulose and/or its derivatives, comprises reacting cellulose polymers (I) and/or their derivatives with tert-alkyl-azo-cyano-carboxylic acid derivatives (II) in presence of an acid acceptor. Preparing cellulose-tert-alkyl-azo-cyano-carboxylic acid ester having a backbone formed from cellulose and/or its derivatives, comprises reacting cellulose polymers of formula (I) and/or their derivatives with tert-alkyl-azo-cyano-carboxylic acid derivatives of formula (II) in presence of an acid acceptor. R1-R5 : H, SO 3Na, PO(ONa) 2, NO 2, C(S)S-Na, 1-20C alkyl, 1-20C acyl or aryl (optionally cationically-, anionically-, hydrophobically- and/or amphiphilically substituted); n : 300-60000; R6 : 1-20C alkyl or 1-20C carboxyalkyl; R7-R9 : 1-5C alkyl or phenyl; X : halo or ROO -; and R : alkyl, aryl or arylalkyl. Independent claims are also included for: (1) tert-alkyl-azo-cyano-carboxylic acid ester of cellulose and/or its derivatives prepared from cellulose polymers of formula (III); (2) preparing graft polymers, comprising reacting at least one radically polymerizable monomer with at least one initiator which comprises the above tert-alkyl-azo-cyano-carboxylic acid ester of cellulose and/or its derivatives; and (3) the graft copolymer prepared by the above method. R22-R25 : H, SO 3Na, PO(ONa) 2, C(S)S-Na, 1-20C alkyl, 1-20C acyl or aryl, where R23 may also be selected such that R23 is bonded to additional glucose units through a link to form amylopectin, and at least one of R21-R25 = (CH(=O)-R26-C(CN)(CH 3)-N=N-C(R27)(R29)-R28) (IV); R26 : 1-20C alkyl or 1-20C carboxyalkyl (both optionally substituted and interrupted by heteroatoms); and R27-R29 : 1-5C alkyl or phenyl.
