The method involves determining first torque that prevents an engine (102) from stalling. Engine torque is limited for a first period when first difference between engine speed and one of turbine speed and transmission input shaft speed is greater than a first threshold based on the first torque when a driver actuates an accelerator from a first position in which the accelerator is not depressed to a second position in which the accelerator is depressed. The engine torque is adjusted based on a driver torque request when the first period ends.
