The method involves determining a measuring signal (MS) of a linear lambda probe (3). Air/fuel ratio in an exhaust gas tract (1) is determined based on pump current. A differential signal is compared with a pump voltage signal (U P) and a Nernst voltage signal (U N). A first converter lambda signal is determined based on first predetermined mapping rule of a measurement signal of the probe. A second converter lambda signal is determined based on second predetermined mapping rule of the difference signal of the probe. Error of the probe is determined based on two lambda signals. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating a linear lambda probe.
