The method involves arranging an exhaust gas probe (15) in an exhaust gas passage (18) of an internal combustion engine (10). Residue oxygen contents in exhaust gas are determined. Determined residue oxygen values with the exhaust gas probe are adjusted temporarily against atmospheric oxygen contents. Navigation preview ahead-lying sections of a track are detected. Prognosis data for the atmospheric oxygen contents is determined for adaptation of lambda control. The exhaust gas probe is a wide band lambda probe, on-off lambda probe or a gas sensor. An independent claim is also included for a device for performing lambda control in an internal combustion engine.
