The device has a paddle screw with cutting edges-containing segments for crushing the roughage, where the paddle screw is arranged in a trough. The shortest distances between adjacent cutting edges of the paddle screw vary in the longitudinal direction of the paddle screw. The segments are individually connected with a shaft. The trough is formed in U-shape, where an open area of the U-shape is provided as supply opening for the roughage to be crushed.
