The method involves electrically conductingly connecting an electrical load with an electrical ground potential (M) of an onboard network (1). An electrical current flowing through a main ground cord (9), and another electrical current flowing through another main ground cord (10) are detected, where the latter main ground cord is arranged parallel to the former cord. An electrical fault in one of the cords is detected during preset deviation of a current difference, which is formed from the currents, from a reference value. The cords are guided through coils (12, 13). An independent claim is also included for a device for monitoring and/or protecting an onboard network for a vehicle.
