The rearview mirror system has a rear view mirror, whose reflectance is variable, and a control device, which is designed to adjust the reflectance of the mirror depending on a parameter by controlling the rear view mirror. A vision detection device is designed to detect the vision directed towards the rear view mirror by a person. The control device is designed to change the adjusted reflectance of the mirror as a function of a time period of the detected vision on the rear-view mirror. An independent claim is included for a method for controlling a rearview mirror with variable reflectance of a motor vehicle.
