The traffic information system comprises a server (101), and a motor vehicle (102) with a communication unit (103) for exchanging data with the server and with another motor vehicle (104a to 104c). Each motor vehicle comprises a sensor unit (107a to 107d) for detecting environmental data. The latter motor vehicle comprises another communication unit (105a to 105c), which is designed, such that the environmental data detected by the sensor unit of the latter motor vehicle is transmitted to the former communication unit of the former motor vehicle. An independent claim is included for a method for operating a traffic information system.
