The method involves determining an actual rotation speed of a charging device (6). A target speed of the charging device is determined based on a predetermined compressor characteristic diagram. A first error in an air supply system (3) is determined when the actual rotational speed of the charging device is greater than the target rotation speed of the charging device. A leakage in a high pressure portion of the air supply system is determined as a first mistake. A second mistake in an active exhaust gas recirculation is recognized.
