A method is described for estimating the residual energy of an electrical energy store (20). This supplies an electrical auxiliary traction drive (30) of a motor vehicle (10) with electrical energy. The method comprises the steps: - Determining a future operating intensity of the auxiliary traction drive (30) on the basis of at least one input. The entry identifies the driving style of a route ahead. - Reserving an energy portion of a total amount of energy available in the energy store (20). The reserved energy component is determined from the determined future operating intensity using a predetermined consumption parameter. The consumption parameter characterizes the drive-specific consumption of electrical energy by the electrical auxiliary traction drive (30) and - estimating the residual energy by reducing the total amount of energy available by the reserved energy portion. A device (40) for residual energy estimation and a control device (22) are also described.
