The welding system comprises a narrow gap welding head (25), a narrow gap blade (30) formed in a longitudinal direction of the welding head, and an enclosure surrounding the narrow gap blade. The enclosure is open at a distal end of the head, has an opening (40) in a plane of the opening, and extends transversely to a longitudinal direction of the blade. The opening has a dimension of 200 mm. The welding head and blade are formed for gas metal arc narrow gap welding such as metal inert gas welding. The welding system comprises a narrow gap welding head (25), a narrow gap blade (30) formed in a longitudinal direction of the welding head, and an enclosure surrounding the narrow gap blade. The enclosure is open at a distal end of the head, and has an opening (40) in a plane of the opening, and extends transversely to a longitudinal direction of the blade. The opening has a dimension of 200 mm. The welding head and blade are formed for gas metal arc narrow gap welding such as metal inert gas welding. The welding system comprises a web guide, a guide track, a rail and/or a driving unit by which a weld is moved along the blade. The weld is performed in spherical bead technique and stringer bead technique. An independent claim is included for a welding method.
